Sand extraction along the major rivers creates sand holes: water-filled excavations in the landscape for sand extraction. Sand holes have become deeper and deeper due to more modern sand suction techniques, they are sometimes up to 40 meters deep.
Sand holes are often visible from the river by the fact that an access has been made for a sand hole to be able to sail into the hole with a dredger or sand dredger and then to drain the sand over the river with inland vessels or barges. Sand transport by water is many times cheaper than by road or rail.
