In the river landscape, of course, the long, meandering river courses themselves stand out the most. Meanders (omega-shaped bends) are created by soil being washed away in outer bends, where the water flows faster, while soil is deposited in inner bends, where the water flows less quickly. Due to this mechanism, the bends have the natural tendency to become wider and wider, so that the river also becomes longer and longer. It is only in the last thousand years that man has recorded the meandering river courses in a system of dikes and groynes.
