First, a bit of history. On Tuesday, June 13, 1899, three boys from Blaricum skipped school. They were Lammert Rigter Jzn., then 11 years old, Jan Tak, and Lammert Vos. They walked through the meadows to the Zuiderzee (now the Gooimeer). There, they had the scare of their lives. They found the body of a woman that had washed ashore. They ran home and told their parents what they had seen. In turn, the parents went to the police. On the stormy night of June 12 to 13, 1899, the woman had drowned along with her husband and four children when their boat sank. Since it was forbidden to bury this woman, of whose faith we do not know, in a Christian cemetery, she was buried at the first General Cemetery. That was a piece of land behind the nursery of Heerschop, to the left of the Milky Way. This is where the history of the General Cemetery of Blaricum began.
Later, in 1920, a site was designated at the back in the meadow next to the Oostermeent, the current location on Woensbergweg. It was a barren, desolate place and only accessible via a cart track. Paths and landscaping were added to the site. However, due to neglect and incompetence, the municipality sought another location. They considered a piece of land behind villa "De Morel," on the Schapendrift. The residents of the surrounding estates did not accept that and opposed this plan.
Mr. H. de Vries Robbe lived on Eemnesserweg in villa "Rozenhage," and he came up with a solution. He believed that the current cemetery should be maintained and offered to take on the maintenance for the first five years, including putting up a fence and benches. In return, from the municipality, he wanted to establish a family grave and the municipality's promise to improve the access road to the cemetery. The municipality agreed, and thus a barren plain became a place of rest and contemplation.
Now we find on this green and beautifully landscaped cemetery the graves of many famous and well-known Dutch people and Blaricum residents, including Bart van der Leck, Gerrit den Braber, Anton Dreesman, Willy van Hemert, Jaap Verver, Coen Flink, Rob Out, and the famous mathematician Professor Dr. Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer.
