Museum Valkenburg: South Limburg art and history
If you walk through the center of Valkenburg aan de Geul, you will automatically pass a building of marlstone with a hard stone platform. This used to be the town hall: an Art Nouveau building from 1900, designed by architect J.H.C.Kröner. Museum Valkenburg is now located here.
Come in and get to know south Limburg artists from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In the downstairs rooms you can see temporary exhibitions with works by well-known painters such as: Charles Eyck, Sjef Hutschemakers, Hans Truijen, Jacques Vonk, Patrick Creighton and Daan Wildschut.
Or from Amsterdam Limburgers like Lei Molin. The upper floor is the domain of contemporary artists, they show work that surprises again and again, whether abstract or spiritual.
When you say South Limburg, you certainly think of marl. Many buildings, such as this museum, are constructed of marl. What exactly is that? How is it won? You can watch a film about this South Limburg building block in the mezzanine. One room is entirely dedicated to the rise of tourism in Limburg, in which Valkenburg was at the forefront. Historical objects make time stand still for a moment.
Do you want to experience a journey through time? About 60 million years ago, South Limburg was part of the sea. You can see an impressive fossil collection from the Cretaceous period. About 5000 years ago this area was wooded. Residents used flint for axes and other utensils. Fun for the grandparents with grandchildren.
Have you seen a lot? Then you can take a break with a free cup of coffee in the museum shop and watch a film about a current exhibition. In the display cases are all kinds of art objects and beautiful art books that you can buy.
