Brabantse Wal near Calfven

The Brabantse Wal is part of the border area between the lower-lying Zeeuwse clay landscape and the higher-lying Brabant sand landscape.
The most striking feature in the landscape of the Brabantse Wal is the steep edge, an abrupt transition from the lower-lying clay polders to the higher sandy soils. The steep edge, also known as the high edge and verge, probably originated as a result of erosion by the river Schelde and the sea. It reaches heights of approximately 20 m +NAP. Bergen op Zoom, Halsteren, Woensdrecht, and Ossendrecht likely also emerged because the location on the steep edge provided a safe haven against flooding while giving direct access to the fertile clay lands.
In addition to the elevation difference, the landscape differences on either side of the Brabantse Wal are also remarkable.
The lower-lying clay area is laid out in a straight pattern and is a typical open, flat agricultural landscape with scattered farms.
The higher sandy soils form a much more closed landscape with forests and heath, irregular block patterns, and winding roads. The landscape clearly shows more relief, especially in the forested areas where wind-formed sand dunes are present.

The Brabantse Wal has been designated as a geological monument. The status of geological monument is awarded in the Netherlands to areas or locations with special geological (geological, geomorphological, soil-related) values. A geological monument does not have the status of a national or municipal monument but is intended to stimulate interest in the area and to spread knowledge about this area to a wider audience.
