The Vault at the Sjaasberg

At the top of the forest between Valkenburg and Walem, on the Schaelsberg, lies an evocative hermit's residence with a chapel. It was once built by the then lord of the castle of Schaloen. Since 1688 until 1930, hermits have lived here, a total of sixteen different ones. Each contributed in their own way to this mysterious monument. Next to the residence and the chapel, there are fourteen Stations of the Cross arranged in a circle.
Pilgrimages to this place have been taking place since 1758, always on the last Sunday of June: the Sjaasbergergank. This tradition is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Netherlands.
At the top of the Schaelsberg, you also have a great view over the Geuldal.
