On the Mescherhei, a landmark has been realized in the form of a modern lookout tower that refers in many different ways to the rich history of the place. Information can be found about the current landscape (use) and that from the distant past. This occurs at a strategic location where many valuable archaeological finds have been made in the area, some of which are unique to the Netherlands, and which is situated at the border of the former two municipalities of Eijsden and Margraten. The spot that was already used as a viewpoint by reindeer hunters in prehistoric times regains its function to make people (once again) aware of the landscape they are in. By erecting a tower 9 meters high, the experience of the expansive panorama is further emphasized, and the opportunity arises to convey information in a unique way to a broad audience. In addition, in collaboration with local entrepreneurs, a sensory orchard has been created with fruit trees of old varieties and information about them.
