Back in time. 1926. That year, the Muiden fortress was decommissioned. The ramparts are no longer needed. In the East, the ramparts still serve their purpose. In the West of the city, a major change is underway. The Fermanpark is being built where you are now standing. To make way for this, the ramparts are lowered. Depending on the location, they are lowered by 1 to as much as 4 meters. Walking paths are created, and trees are planted. And thus, a beautiful, new park emerges within the contours of the old rampart.
In the Muiden fortress, there are three 'bears', and one of them is right in front of you. Don’t look for a large, hairy animal. No, a bear is a masonry dam in a fortress moat. It is meant to regulate the water level. In 2012, significant restorations took place in Muiden. Since then, there has been a wide entrance with steps at the entrance of the fortress. Through this entrance, you walk over the remains of the bear. Would you like to take a look?
