You are at the Herengracht and you see the Keetpoortsluice. This sluice has a monumental status. It is considered a provincial monument because it is so characteristic of the history of North Holland. It was a double-reversing sluice, which also had an inundation function. It could flood areas during wartime. The sluice complex you see now dates back to 1855.
The sluice is located between the Vecht river on one side and the trekgracht on the other side. This was the starting point for the 'trekschuiten' to Naarden. That Naarden 'trekvaart' was an important transport link in the 17th century. The origin of the original sluice itself also dates back to that period.
On top of the sluice stood a wide drawbridge. It was replaced in the early 20th century by the lift bridge with iron beams that you see now. Nowadays, the sluice is still used to turn the Naarder Trekvaart.
