Castle of Gronsveld

The Castle of Gronsveld is located in the basin of the village of the same name, Gronsveld, which is part of the Dutch Limburg municipality of Eijsden-Margraten. The castle, which was rebuilt in the 19th century after being demolished, is a national monument. Originally, a 13th-century motte-and-bailey castle would have stood on the site of the castle, which was the precursor to the rectangular fortress built around 1300 with round corner towers. This fortress was owned by the powerful Lords of Gronsveld and served as the seat of their Lordship. The Lords of Gronsveld owned several castles and estates in the Duchy of Limburg and the Land of Rode. When Johan III of Gronsveld was murdered in Aachen in 1386, his brother, Hendrik III of Gronsveld, inherited his entire estate, including Gronsveld and Rimburg. Due to the lack of a male heir, the lordship of Gronsveld came into the possession of the Van Bronckhorst family when Diederik van Bronckhorst-Batenburg, lord of Batenburg and Anholt, married the granddaughter of Hendrik. The Van Bronckhorst family had good relations with Emperor Maximilian I and his grandson Emperor Charles V. At the behest of the former, the free lordship was elevated to a barony in 1498, allowing Diederik and his descendants to bear the title of baron. Joost van Bronckhorst was elevated to imperial count by Emperor Rudolf II in 1586, which granted him a seat in the German Reichstag and allowed him to call himself a prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
