The castle originally dates from the thirteenth century. The first castle was destroyed in the sixteenth century and rebuilt in 1594. In 1634, the then uninhabited house fell prey to a gang of adventurers led by Theodoor Cauwenberg, who made the region unsafe. Troops from Liège and Aachen then besieged the castle and dismantled it. In 1833 the remains were cut down into a plateau, on which the current castle was built. In 1880 the castle was expanded.
