Driving through the deck sand landscape of the Achterhoek and Twente you get a different view every few meters. Sometimes it is a forest edge, sometimes it is fields and meadows or scattered farms in the landscape.
You see landscape elements behind hedgerows and tree groups disappear and reappear a little later. It looks like a stage with different wings, hence the name scenery.
The planting in a scenic landscape consists mainly of (hawthorn) hedges and hedgerows. Hedgerows are earthen ramparts, densely overgrown with trees and shrubs. Nowadays, many old hedgerows have partly or completely disappeared from the landscape.
