The most literal highlight of Landgraaf is the Wilhelminaberg, which appears on the horizon far beyond the municipality. However, the wooded slopes were not always so green. This mountain originated from mining stone, originating from the Wilhelmina State Mine.
Mining rock is an inevitable by-product of coal mining. From 1906 to 1969 it was poured day and night via long conveyor belts, making the mountain bigger and bigger. The Wilhelminaberg is therefore an artificial mountain and a silent witness to the vanished mining industry.
After the mine closures, the mountain has been given a recreational use. On top of the west flank rests the largest indoor ski slope in the world. Next to it is the longest open-air staircase in the Netherlands. Every day, hundreds of people climb the 508 steps to the top and have a magnificent view of the Euregio from 225 meters above sea level.
