The historic city center of Sittard has many hidden gems. Like Fort Sanderbout. Nestled in the eastern ramparts near Putstraat lies this only visible bulwark from the old fortifications of Sittard. It is one of the last witnesses of a turbulent history. Across from the fort, you will find the Wijngaard Fort Sanderbout. The roots of the grapevines draw their nourishment from the centuries-old ramparts. A dedicated group of volunteers tends to the grapevines with great love and devotion. Inside the Fort, they craft delicious wine from their pinot noir and pinot gris grapes in an artisanal way: the Zittesje Wien from the Wal.
The fort now houses three exhibitions: defense through the ages, Jewish cemetery, and vineyard. Three completely different themes that together tell the story of Sittard. A fortified town where defense, religion, and food were of vital importance.
