The Slakmolen is the only remaining mill of the three watermills known from the history of Elsloo. It is fed by the Slakbeek. The construction of this watermill was commissioned as early as 1553. The (ban)mill has had various owners, all of whom had a connection to the brewery or the castle. During its existence, the Slakmolen has been renovated and restored several times. The current castle housing the mill was rebuilt around 1835. Even after this time, part of the castle and outbuildings were destroyed by fire. Only the battlemented tower with an annex remains from the former castle.
In the 1920s, many watermills were put out of operation due to the rise of electrically powered mills. The Slakmolen, which remained in service until 1924, was also decommissioned at that time. Both the outbuildings and the mill fell into disrepair. In 1984, restoration of the outbuildings began, now the hotel "Kasteel Elsloo," and in 1988 the mill was restored for the last time in its current form.
