Museum Romeinse Katakomben is a Roman historical museum. Wandering through the underground corridors will bring you back to the 3rd and 4th century Rome. You descend to the tombs of common roman citizens and to the magnificent, colourful tombs of the roman upper class. It is a labyrinth with catacombs just like in ancient Rome. In these catacombs, there are beautiful frescos and wall paintings, next to this there is also a marble statue of St. Caecilia.
The museum was founded in 1910 by Mr. Jan Diepen, son of a wealthy textile industrial, in cooperation with the famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers.
The museum also offers a contemporary cultural program with exhibitions, events, cultural festivals and lectures in one of their bigger underground areas.
