Slot Zuylen - TOP

The Vecht owed its important transport function from the fact that it was connected to the Rhine. Because the river flowed north, it was the fastest way from the Rhine to the Zuiderzee, Scandinavia and Northern Germany and the port of Amsterdam. The river was therefore part of the Cologne Canal, the canal on the Ruhr area. With the Rhine water came sediment that deposited against the banks of the river and thus formed bank walls. In the otherwise soggy peatland, the earliest habitation took place on these embankments. In the 13th century, a keep was built on the bank just outside Utrecht, the predecessor of the current Slot Zuylen. The medieval castle was converted into a comfortable country estate in 1755 and is now a beautiful museum.
