Flood disaster
In 1953, the flood disaster occurred. Seventy-eight people from Halsteren and Lepelstraat (now part of the municipality of Bergen op Zoom) drowned. During the 50th anniversary commemoration, the municipality of Bergen op Zoom commissioned the artist collective Krot en Co to visualize this disaster appropriately. With "Signals in the Landscape," a worthy memorial site has been created through a series of storm surge pillars and a wreath of 78 roses on a storm surge pillar.
Monument
On January 31, 2003, the monument was unveiled by Mayor Peter van der Velden. After a year, the survivors requested that the artwork be preserved. It was decided to reduce the number of storm surge pillars and concentrate them along the Slikkenburgseweg, while one particular feature was maintained at Sint-Ignatiusdijk: the tin wreath with roses by Maarten Fleuren. Around this pillar, perspex benches have been placed to create a quiet space. A statement from a survivor: "Let us remember; we have nothing more in our power," takes on greater significance.
