You can safely call Hulst the most Flemish city in the Netherlands. Logical: until well into the 17th century, Hulst belonged to the county of Flanders. In 1596, Archduke Albert achieved one of his few military victories here. In the middle of the Eighty Years' War, he recaptures the city from the Protestant insurgents. Under the Archdukes, the imposing fortifications are also built that you can see to this day. To no avail: in 1648 Hulst became part of the independent Republic of the Netherlands. On the Grote Markt of Hulst you can see the impressive St. Willibrord's Basilica. The church itself dates from the 15th century. However, its spire is lost in World War II. It was only in the 50s of the last century that the basilica received its current crowning. Hulst itself is a protected cityscape and is rich in sights. In the historic heart of Hulst you will find numerous food and beverage outlets. Be sure to go to the tourist office for more info! The Tourist Office is also your next stop in the context of VOSSEN.
