The Buyckxe Pit was dug in 1650 when the inhabitants of Nijhoven were given permission to dig a pit to give their cattle a drink and to breed fish. They also had access to extinguishing water.
The pit never runs dry. It is located in an area where a lot of seepage water rises. The Lei rises in this region, which flows via Riel to Tilburg and from there flows as Donge to Geertruidenberg to flow into the Amer.
The lake owes its name to a Buyckx family, who used to be the owner of the piece of land on which the lake is located. When permission was given to dig this pit, the subsoil belonged to a different owner.
P.S. In hiking guide called "gully at Sint-Salvators".
