Descripció

In 1926 Prof. B.F. Overmaat, rector of the Seminary in Driebergen, applied for permission to build this church and rectory. The design comes from H. Kroes en Zn. in Amersfoort and construction was carried out in 1926-1927 by contractor L.J. Hemels in Amersfoort. The church is the first in the Netherlands to be dedicated to St. Theresa, a Norman nun who was canonized in 1925. In 1931 the presbytery was extended with a rectangular extension against the south façade designed by architect J. Willemse in Vreeswijk. The extension was carried out by J. van der Wielen in Houten. The church building is a single-hall church with an attached presbytery in a traditionalist style with neo-Gothic influences. The church has a gable roof, which is covered with red tuile-du-nord tiles. On the roof there is a turret annex bell tower with clock and cross. The façades are made of red brick. The symmetrically arranged façade has a pointed arched portico in the middle with a wooden double door. On either side of the portico is a small pointed arch window. Above the portico is a white sandstone statue of St. Theresa with the text ROSARUM IMBREM ET COELO EFFUNDAM. The statue, which was made by Wim Harzing from Rijssenburg, is crowned by a canopy. In the gable a cross has been incorporated into the ornamental brickwork. The side walls are articulated by buttresses in five bays, four of which have pointed arched three-lights. All windows feature stained-glass representations designed by the Utrecht stained glass artist Henricus L.D. Kocken. In 1965 the interior of the church was modified as a result of the Second Vatican Council. The Stations of the Cross by Willem Wiegmans in Rijssenburg then disappeared under a layer of wall paint. These were partially resurfaced in the 1980s. The church building has an intermediate member on the right side that connects to the adjacent presbytery. The red brick building has an attached conservatory to the rear façade on the left. The entrance is to the left of the centre of the façade in a round-arched portico. The windows at the front door have stained glass. In 1931 the presbytery was extended with a rectangular extension against the south façade.
