Noordpolderzijl has the smallest seaport in the Netherlands and is located on the Wadden Sea, south of Rottumeroog. The name of the hamlet refers to the sluice of the Noordpolder.
Next to the former fish auction, the village has a living room café, aptly named the Zielhoes (= sluice house), with a residence. This residence is the former service house of the sluice keeper. The sluice is no longer functioning, but the monumental interior of the sluice is still present. A pumping station, also called Noordpolderzijl, has taken over the function of the sluice.
The village is very popular as a stopping place for tourists. It is one of the few places in the north of Groningen where one can easily access the sea dike to get a glimpse of the Wadden Sea.
Noordpolderzijl is located on the European walking route E9. Locally, the route is also known as the Wad- and Wierdenpad.
