The visitor centre De Wheem is located in a monumental farm, in the middle of the Reestdal. In this tourist transfer point you can get information about the area from the volunteers of Landschap Overijssel.
In addition to beautiful exhibitions, you will find a nice shop and you can go there for a nice cup of coffee with krentewegge or real Reestdalkoek. Children can have fun in the badger castle in the Wheem or on the exciting Play Nature Trail that starts behind De Wheem. Interesting activities in the landscape are regularly organized at De Wheem for young and old!
Oud Avereest is such a typical hamlet in the Overijssels Reestdal. A collection of houses and some farms around a well-restored church, which has probably dominated the landscape since 1236. Around the spire, which was rebuilt more than 150 years ago, a jackdaw circles in silence. The Reestkerk was once the only one in the area and believers walked to the church via various church paths.
You can still explore the Reestdal via such paths, but the opposite visitor center De Wheem is now the starting point. The pastor once lived in the stately farm, then it became an inn and now Landschap Overijssel has turned it into a visitor center.
