The name Nijenrode means newly cleared soil. Around 1275 Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel had his first castle built here. His family coat of arms consisted of a golden field and a red bar, and these colors still adorn the shutters on the estate.
The castle is surrounded by water and accessible over two drawbridges. There are a number of outbuildings. The estate is accessed through the gatehouse, which was built during the First World War. The coach building was also restored at that time. Above the entrance of the coach house is a relief with the knight Gisbregt van Nijenrode.
