El nombre Nijenrode significa suelo recién desarraigado. Alrededor de 1275, Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel mandó construir aquí un primer castillo. Su escudo familiar consistía en un campo dorado y una banda roja, y estos colores todavía adornan las contraventanas de la finca.
El castillo está rodeado de agua y es accesible a través de un par de puentes levadizos. Hay varios edificios anexos. La finca es accesible a través del edificio de la puerta, que fue construido durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. También se restauró el edificio de los carruajes en esa época. Sobre la entrada de la casa de carruajes hay un relieve del caballero Gisbregt de Nijenrode.
