Il nome Nijenrode significa terreno appena dissodato. Intorno al 1275, Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel fece costruire qui un primo castello. Il suo stemma familiare era composto da un campo dorato e una banda rossa, e questi colori abbelliscono ancora oggi gli scuri della tenuta.
Il castello è circondato dall'acqua ed è accessibile attraverso due ponti levatoi. Ci sono alcuni edifici secondari. La tenuta è accessibile tramite il portico, costruito durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Anche la scuderia fu restaurata in quel periodo. Sopra l'ingresso della scuderia c'è un rilievo con il cavaliere Gisbregt van Nijenrode.
