Staverden is a beauty of a location to take a break. In addition to his church, there is the famous castle of Staverden that is located on the Hierdense Beek.
In 1291, Count Reinald I obtained permission from the emperor to make Staverden a city, a plan that never materialized.
In the 19th century Staverden developed rapidly, especially after the purchase of the estate by Jan Rudolf Kemper in 1835. Wild lands were added to the property and cleared, roads were built or improved. Gradually, the lands upstream of the stream were cleared into agricultural areas.
The heathland and peatlands have remained unexplored for a long time. When the heath began to lose its function for agriculture, it was wooded or converted into agricultural land. In 1911 the peat was cleared into agricultural land. This was the last major mining on Staverden.
