On May 25, 1944, at half past two in the morning, a British Halifax LV 905 MK III bomber crashed in the Oranjepolder near Hank in North Brabant. The bomber was part of an armada of 432 aircraft, which were on their way back from a bombing raid on a railway yard near the German city of Aachen.
The seven crew members of the Halifax were killed in the crash. One of them could be identified as Sergeant Butler, the Mid-Upper Air gunner.
The remains of the crew members were buried at the Jonkerbos military cemetery in Nijmegen. Remains were also left behind together with the wreck in the swamp soil of the 'Kromme Holle'.
Last year, the aircraft and crew were excavated. The monument consists of the propeller of the crashed plane.
