Katwijk aan sea

Description

Katwijk aan Zee is, as the name suggests, by the sea. Around 1230, the place was no more than a core of a few huts. After 1300, the place began to grow and soon became known for fishing, but also for inland shipping. In 1388, the fish market of Katwijk aan den Rijn was moved to Katwijk aan Zee. The two places had already fallen under the same administration, Katwijk, which at that time was a lordship. Since the 20th century, Katwijk aan Zee has been a well-known seaside resort. By the late 1960s, Katwijk had the largest fishing fleet in the Netherlands with 180 ships. Later, when more modern ships came, the Katwijk vessels moved to the ports of IJmuiden and Scheveningen, and the fleet became smaller.

During World War II, part of the development in Katwijk aan Zee was demolished by the Germans. This involved a 200-meter-wide strip of houses along the coast that had to disappear to make way for the Atlantic Wall. Only after the war did the boulevard acquire its current appearance.

By the late 1980s, Katwijk aan Zee merged with Katwijk aan den Rijn and the northern (new construction) districts of Hoornes and Rijnsoever, now Katwijk-Noord, into one large municipality, Katwijk. As of January 1, 2006, the surrounding villages of Rijnsburg and Valkenburg also fall under the municipality of Katwijk.
