Prinsendijk
The fact that this quay was not called the Hoogheemraadschapskade, but the Prinsendijk had to do with the man who had fort Wierickerschans built, Stadholder Willem III. In 1672, known in Dutch history as the Year of Disaster, the Netherlands ran into major problems. France, England and the bishops of Cologne and Munster attacked the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The invasion by the French army could hardly be prevented and threatened the region of Holland. The prince therefore also wanted a good connection along this flank of the water line and because in the Republic a prince also had more prestige than a water board administrator, the name Prinsendijk was chosen.
