Maasvlakte 2 (commonly referred to as the Second Maasvlakte) is the name for the expansion project of the Port of Rotterdam, located to the west of Maasvlakte. This expansion of 2,000 hectares will make the port twenty percent larger. Upon completion, the ports will cover a total of 12,000 hectares. On September 1, 2008, after years of planning, discussions, and protests, the construction began. It is expected that the expansion will be operational in 2013.
Maasvlakte 2 will be located in the Voordelta, a protected nature area. In the construction and management of the new port area, efforts are made to spare the natural environment as much as possible. However, transforming 2,000 hectares of seabed into a port will inevitably impact the plants and animals that live there. Therefore, compensatory measures are being implemented.
As a form of compensation for the loss of the seabed in the Voordelta, a seabed protection area will be established southwest of the land reclamation in the North Sea. This area encompasses 25,000 hectares - more than ten times the land reclamation - of protected seabed, which will include resting spots for various species.
