The first remains of Ameide that have been found date back to the early Middle Ages. The first farmers lived along the mouth of the peat stream the A that flowed into the Lek. The name of the growing settlement changed over time from Amond and Amuide to Ameide.
Around 1200, the area around Ameide was completely cleared. There was active trade in the village, which was granted city rights by Floris V in 1277 because it was located in a strategic place.
The river Lek has played an important role in the history of Ameide. On December 24, 1741, there was a major dike breach near Ameide, which caused the entire land surrounding Ameide to be flooded. This happened again around 1744, but with less damage than in 1741.
The prosperity that the city experienced in the Middle Ages and thereafter can still be seen in the many monumental buildings that the place boasts. There is, among other things, a Dutch Reformed Church from 1350 (burned down and restored in 1953) and a town hall from 1644.
