Coal was also called ‘The Black Gold’. Coal was the most important fuel for cooking and heating your home. A lot of people worked in the Limburg mines last century. They were called miners, or 'koempels'. And that work - very deep underground - was no picnic.

They had to crawl, it was scorching hot, and it was extremely noisy. Those miners looked pitch black from all that dust. It was very heavy work, with large machines and even underground trains. In the Coal Mine Valkenburg, you can see how it all was. Where coal comes from. There, real miners tell you their strong stories, and how it all went. They also show a film. Opening hours:
April 1 to November 1 tours every hour between 10:00 - 17:00
November 1 to Christmas holiday tours at 12:00, 13:30, and 15:00.
After the Christmas holiday until April 1 Monday to Friday at 14:00.
During the weekends and spring break tours at 12:00, 13:30, and 15:00.
The duration of the tour is approximately 75 minutes.

The Coal Mine is closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Carnival Sunday and Monday.

Groups are welcome by appointment from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Evening tours are also possible.
