Fort Hedikhuizen, near the town of Hedikhuizen in the municipality of Heusden, was built in 1862. It was part of the Zuider Waterlinie and was used to protect the inundation sluice. The lock made it possible to allow water from the Meuse to flow inside the dikes in a controlled manner, so that a large area could be flooded to protect the fortress of Heusden against attack.
