The first mention of IJsselmuiden can be found in a charter from 1133, when it was still directly at the mouth of the Almere. IJsselmuiden originated from several cores. Mainly as a small village on a sandbank, left behind by the river IJssel, over which the Dorpsweg now runs. The elevation in the streetscape is clearly visible on both sides of the former dike. Parts of the old Reformed Church, which stands there on that elevation, date back to around 1200.
The other core, which contributes less and falls outside the clear village boundaries, is Oosterholt. Here used to be a Carthusian monastery on a low hill, but it has been destroyed and the location is as yet unknown.
The village has never been a major player in regional politics and historically there was little on which IJsselmuiden could have based power. It has always been surrounded by the more influential or strategically located places Grafhorst (which was granted city rights) in the north, Genemuiden, Zwartsluis and Hasselt in the northeast, Zwolle in the east, Wilsum (which had certain city rights) and Zalk (with a now destroyed castle) in the southeast and just over the IJssel in the south Kampen.
