Spijk (Rhine values)
Spijk is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The name originates from the word Herespich. It has about 600 inhabitants. Although the neighboring Lobith has the name, the river Rhine enters the Netherlands at Spijk. Lobith is located within the same municipality, but is located along the Rhine a little further from the German border. However, the stream here is called Upper Rhine.
Spijk is surrounded by the towns of Lobith, Tolkamer, the German Elten and the river Rhine. The road from Spijk to Elten, the Oude Kleefse Postweg, is Dutch territory on one side, German territory on the other. At the point where in the past (1865-1926) a railway ferry transferred the train in the railway line Zevenaar - Kleve to Spijck, on the German side of the river, is the point that is used in the regulations for shipping to indicate the border with Germany. Upstream of the so-called Spijkse Veer, i.e. towards Germany, inland skippers must have a Rhine patent in order to be allowed to sail on the Rhine. Below the Spijkse Veer, a boating license is sufficient.
