On Sunday, September 17, 1944, the air here was filled with planes, gliders and parachutes. The fields around Heelsum and Renkum served as the landing site for hundreds of Allied paratroopers and gliders. This impressive spectacle was the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands.
Hundreds of paratroopers came down here this day. They went on their way to Arnhem, but soon found out that the Germans had blocked the road in front of them. They tried to break the blockade, but it didn't happen as quickly as expected. Only 1 battalion, that of Lieutenant Colonel John Frost, finally managed to reach the bridge of Arnhem. This was the first day of a massive military operation, which should have heralded the end of World War II. Unfortunately, things turned out completely differently.
