Currently a suburb of Breda, but not so long ago a characteristic Middle Brabant village. Bavel belonged to the municipality of Ginneken and Bavel before 1942. In that year, the village of Ginneken was annexed by the municipality of Breda, after which the remainder of the municipality merged into the new municipality of Nieuw-Ginneken. This municipality was dissolved during the municipal reorganization in 1997, after which Bavel was added to Breda. A part of the rural area has been transferred to the municipality of Alphen-Chaam. This concerns the part south of the A58. To avoid confusion with the Breda part, this area was initially given the name Geersbroek. Protests from the municipality of Alphen-Chaam have led to the name Bavel being retained for the Alphen-Chaam part as well. Therefore, there is also a part of Bavel in the municipality of Alphen-Chaam. (Source: Wikipedia)
