As early as 1230, mention is made of the wall of Heukelum. It is precisely now that the old city walls, which were hidden from the eye under an embankment, are being restored to their former glory. A difficult job because the original construction must not be demolished or damaged. The old wall is in such a bad condition that it cannot be restored. It was therefore decided to build a new wall in front of the old one, of course following the example of the original, so that Heukelum regains its historical appearance, partly due to its somewhat higher location.
