The first mentions of a castle on this site date back to the Middle Ages. It was known as Merckenburg for a long time and has had many residents. Jan van Arkel was the first to have a castle built here. No less than 9 other castles followed, which were founded by the van Arkel family. Of these, only Heukelum Castle remains. The current house was built against the old tower in the 18th century and closely resembles a double Amsterdam canal house. The house is inhabited by the current owner and is not open to the public.
