In 1898, the life insurance company 'De Utrecht' started a large reclamation project as a money investment. The aim of this was to create arable land and production forests through the reclamation of heathland. The moors were reclaimed on a larger scale than before. The relief and the different soil types strongly determined the layout of the estate. The lowest, wet soils were used for grassland and the higher, drier soils for arable farming. The highest and driest soils were suitable for forestry.
The estate (2,500 ha) derives its cultural-historical and socio-economic value from the connection between the historical-spatial structure of roads, woods, fields and meadows and the presence of a park landscape and unexplored natural landscape.
In 1922 "De Utrecht" built a monumental holiday home on the estate: Huize Rustoord. The holiday home was intended for the employees of the insurance company who could spend their holidays in a beautiful location in a rustic, leafy setting. In 1976 Huize Rustoord was closed. Around the turn of the century, the building was sold and given a new purpose.
