Markervaart

The Markervaart is a canal that connects the Tapsloot and the Zaan near Westknollendam with the Noordhollandsch Canal. The canal runs almost directly north-south and is 3.9 kilometers long and 2 to 3 meters deep. The Markervaart is named after the Markerpolder, in which the village of Markenbinnen is located. The canal was built along this polder because the Markervaart originally extended to the Stierop. In the 19th century, the canal was extended to the Noordhollandsch Canal. Previously, the Kogerpoldervaart connected the Markervaart with the Noordhollandsch Canal. The northern part of the canal from the Enge Stierop is called the Kogerpolderkanaal.

Since the end of the 19th century, the Markervaart has primarily been used as a connection between the Zaan and the Noordhollandsch Canal. Professional shipping is not allowed to use the northern section of the canal from the Stierop unless the ship is empty. On the north side of the canal is the Woudhaven, a recreational harbor for pleasure boats with some facilities.
