The PEN island, also known as the Diemen Pentagram, is a largely artificial peninsula of 80 hectares in the IJmeer next to the Diemen power plant in Over-Diemen, the eastern part of the municipality of Diemen.
The pentagonal island was created in the 1970s when a construction pit was dredged for the construction of the power plant, which was built by the Provincial Electricity Company of North Holland. The dredged material was discharged outside the dikes and formed a marshy island that was later provided with dikes. On the central, higher areas, a willow swamp emerged. The lower areas mainly consist of reed land.
