The Kolksluis Spaarndam is the oldest working lock in Europe, located in Spaarndam in the Dutch municipality of Haarlem. On the north side of the Kolksluis is the IJ and south of it is the Spaarne.
In the thirteenth century, the Spaarne was dammed from the IJ with the aim of preventing salt water and a high water level from the IJ in the Spaarne and surrounding farmlands. Sluices were installed in the dam to regulate the water level, so that ships could pass through at the same level. Seagoing vessels were also transshipped here to inland vessels to transport cargo to Haarlem and beyond.
