Beet bridge

The Bietenbrug is a bicycle bridge in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer that connects the towns of Zwanenburg and Halfweg. In Halfweg, the bridge lands on the grounds of SugarCity. The bridge is named after the sugar beets that were processed here into sugar. The Bietenbrug in Zwanenburg is a bridge spanning the Ringvaart of Haarlemmermeer. Since 2012, it has formed the connection between the two villages in the dual village of Zwanenburg/Halfweg. The bridge lands on the south side across from the Zwanenburgerdijk, which lies on the inner side of the Ringvaart Haarlemmermeer; additional safety measures had to be taken here. On the north side, the bridge lands in Halfweg on the grounds of the former CSM sugar factory, now used by SugarCity in the 21st century. There is hardly any other traffic there. The bridge is only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists; fast traffic must use the Zwanenburg bridge, which is actually located between the village centers. The foot and bicycle bridge was deemed necessary to easily provide slow traffic from Zwanenburg access to Station Halfweg-Zwanenburg. The name of the bridge refers to the former storage facility for sugar beets. Residents could submit ideas for a naming of the bridge; the name Bietenbrug came up several times. The bridge was opened on April 27, 2013.
