The Westkappelse Zeedijk is a five-kilometre-long seawall that protects the island of Walcheren from the sea near the town of Westkapelle. The N287 runs over the dike. The coastal defences have been at delta height since 1988. The first dike was built on the spot after the Western Cape, a dune area, was swept away by the sea in the fifteenth century. Since that time, this weak spot in the dunes on the coast has always been diked. At Westkapelle, the dike on the landward side has the appearance of a 'green' dike; On the seaward side, however, the construction is covered with a layer of asphalt. In the direction of Domburg, the dike has the appearance of an artificial dunes with a crest height of eleven to twenty meters. The surface of the flood defence consists mainly of blocks of basalt stone that can withstand the force of the sea due to their weight, hardness and special shape. This material was widely used in the construction of the Zuiderzee Works and the Delta Works.
