This tower is the oldest still-existing cast iron lighthouse in the Netherlands, after the lighthouse Noord-Schouwen Laag in Renesse was demolished in 1915 and the cast iron beacon at Flaauwe Werk near Ouddorp disappeared in 1911. The tower has not always had black and white bands, but was initially yellow and later equipped with red and white bands. The optics of the tower were made by Barbier, Bénard & Turenne. The light house contains a copper dome.
The lighthouse was originally located on top of the sea dike. When the dike was raised to delta height in the 1970s, it ended up on the sea side of the dike.
On May 29, 2015, the lighthouse was transferred in a small ceremony by the Belgian government to the Stichting Vuurtoren Breskens. Since then, the tower has been open to the public. The light is also operational again and is marked on nautical charts.
