Birkhoven is a park-like forest and former estate west of Amersfoort. It is located on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The area covers an area of about 60 ha. To the west, it borders the Monnikenbos nature reserve. In the south, the border is formed by the Amersfoort-Utrecht railway line. In the north, the old road between Soest and Amersfoort forms the border. To the east, it is bordered by the Barchman Wuijtierslaan and the Bokkeduinen nature reserve. The Amersfoort Zoo is located in the Birkhoven forest.
