Culemborg Castle is the ruin of the former castle located on the northeast side of the center of Culemborg, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The site where the castle stood now serves as a public historical cultural city park. The castle was founded around 1280 by Hubert van Beusichem and consisted of a large hall. Around 1360 the castle was expanded with a square tower. The round keep was built in 1377 under Gerard van Culemborg, and had walls about 4.40 meters thick. After completing this keep, the construction of a second round tower with a wall thickness of approximately 5 meters was started. The expansions in 1464 took place under the direction of architect Jan van den Doem who had also worked on the Cathedral of Utrecht. Between 1480-1504, extensive extensions must have taken place on the west side of the building. Eventually a castle was created with a pentagonal floor plan, consisting of a large hall, square tower, two round towers, a outer castle with courtyard, and various outbuildings. Near the castle were gardens and a system of tree-lined avenues.
