The Alexandrium shopping area is the largest shopping center in Rotterdam, located in the Oosterflank district. The shopping area consists of three parts: Alexandrium Shopping Center, Alexandrium Megastores, and Alexandrium Woonmall.
Alexandrium Shopping Center was designed by AGS Architekten & Planners and opened in 1984. A few years later, Fons Verheijen designed a large-scale expansion. Upon completion of the expansion in 1996, the name Oosterhof was changed to Alexandrium I. Following the establishment of the Alexandrium, the shopping satellite was opened, a round building located between Alexandrium I and II. It falls under Alexandrium I and was previously a large parking lot. Additionally, shortly after the arrival of Alexandrium II, a long walkway was constructed from section I to II to create a good connection between the areas. After the opening of the shopping satellite, the bridge was removed. Alexandrium I is also referred to as the shopping center. In 2001, the shopping area was expanded, and a new section was added, allowing for a triangular walking path. In this part of the Alexandrium shopping area, several "flagship stores" are present. For example, the retail chain Primark has its first Dutch location here. The bookstore chain Bruna also has its largest store in the Netherlands here. Meanwhile, Alexandrium I has changed its name to Alexandrium Shopping Center. Alexandrium Shopping Center attracts 14 million visitors annually. Additional public interest is drawn by facilitating large events.
